The Caulri

Description

In our modern world, crocodiles and kin are often considered often to sharply to resemble the ancient dinosaurs of the Mesozoic. This isn't very surprising, given that they are their second closest relatives, after the birds.

Over the duration of their long evolution through the future, there would be multiple instances where they converged with a certain trait seen in a group or species.

In the forests of South America, 65 myh, the Caulri (Diolypholis rufuhurus) of caimans has converged partly with with the scelidosaurids. They are 5 feet long, and weigh 400 pounds. They have thick, sprawled legs, with with large bodies. They are covered in 2 rows of ostoderms, with a gathering of 3 in the front. These plates are adorned with yellows, oranges, and reds. They are sexually dimorphic, as they are only seen in males.

They can be over nearly all of South America, and can live in several varying habitats, though they usually prefer rainforest or woodland. They normally are seen on the forest floor, though may sometimes venture onto the lower parts of trees.

The are omnivorous, feeding on roots, fresh shoots, fruits, insects, small tetrapods, and occasionally eggs. They have large, wide stomachs, which are full of stone to help digest all the plant matter they ingest. When not feeding, they are usually resting to help digest all their food.
They normally live alone, but occassionally gather in groups of around 15 when foraging. Males can be aggressive around other animals, ramming into other animals browsing beside them. They can reach speeds of 8 mph under normal circumstances, though they can reach speeds of about 15 mph, for about 30 seconds.

They breed during the wetter months, where males plates are often at their brightest. During this time, they do a series of calls which sound like a series of low grunts (However, they are much too low for humans to hear). Once he attracts a female, he attempts to impress her with his plates. After copulating, the male may stay around for a few days, but inevitably leaves. They lay up to 45 eggs, which the females lay in a hole dug a few inches below the ground. As young, they are colored a mottled brown, which gradually shifts as they grow.

They belong to a new subfamily of caimans known as Longilepids.

The most distinguishable feature of the group are the plates that stretch over the upper body. While most terrestrial caimans would go on to lose their ostoderm covering, they retained it. Their original purpose was most likely defense, their ancestors eventually re-purposed them for display. However, these vibrant plates are only present in males. In females, they are usually only several inches long, with little to no variation, and a dull color scheme.
The plates can vary between species, with all sorts of colors plastered on them. One species, related to the Caulri, L. angacatus, has 4 rows of plates, and are rather long and sharp. They serve a function much like the quills of a porcupine, and when threatened, they plant themselves on the ground, leaving the predator to face just their spikes.

Other than the more developed osterderms, they have kept fairly in touch with the traditional caiman design. Thanks to the warm climates stretching over the world, they can still afford to retain their ectothermy.

Unfortunately for these crocodylomorphs, their prime would be in the Imitorugene. As climates cooled, they were soon restricted to only the Northernmost areas of South America. Finally, with the minor extinction 82 myh, they went extinct.
